01/31/2003 Entry: "John Arch on his solo album"

From the site for Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles magazine (www.bravewords.com):

Former FATES WARNING frontman JOHN ARCH has inked a solo deal with Metal Blade. His forthcoming EP, A Twist Of Fate, will run about 25 minutes and will feature Arch on vocals, Jim Matheos on guitar, Joey Vera on bass and Mike Portnoy on drums. Arch comments on the project: "I think the music has a good feel to it. There are a lot of elements of the old Fates present but it doesn't sound retro 80's thanks in part to the newer recording technology but also the combined influences of Jim, Mike and Joey. The fans who take the time to read through the lyrics should find them challenging but yet brutally honest at times. The lyrics are somewhat personal but I have a feeling everyone can relate at some level. I hope fans new and old will like it. The guys are now completing the final recordings and when it is expect nothing short of sheer genius from these master musicians!"

AMAZING!!!! No one can touch John Arch when it comes to his phrasing ability, I have no idea how he can come up with the melodys and deliver them the way he does. Lyrics = AMAZING!! It's great to finally hear a release where you don't get everything first listen and continue to take things in monthes later. PLEASE RELEASE A FULL LENGTH!!

An incredible EP. John's voice is in fine form. I read that he was tentative about getting back into music since he has been out of it for so long. This EP is fabulous! I hope its quality encourages him to begin work on a full album. Thank you John!

Great EP! -- in fact, WAY better than any Arch's era Fates Warning album. And if I say this, it's because I do prefer the Fates Warning of Ray Alder as it's more clever and more mature: Zonder's drumming and Alder's sense of tempo are unbelieveable. But Arch's EP is excellent on its own. I also hope having some more stuff from him in a near future -- but please Alder, don't leave Fates Warning!

Aside from Judas Priest's SAD WINGS OF DESTINY and Tool's UNDERTOW, the first 3 Fates' releases are by far my favorite albums of all time, much in part to the infamous John Arch. I hope you plan to TOUR supporting this EP and future endeavors (and play some old Fates for us too!). This has been the best metal news I've heard in a decade! I had a dream I was you...

Cannot believe it! Have been waiting now for a week until this c.d. hits the stores. Shopowners go mad because I call them every day to check. It still is not there.
Meanwhile read all these orgasmic reviews on the Net and it makes my hunger only worse.
Anyways, even before hearing the dams disc I ask John Arch: will you come off your lazy butt and start to work on a full album. The metal world obviously demands this from you and as such, you are obliged to give it to us all.

Answer me, save my will - have you forgotten me?

John Arch ... reading keats outloud, I can't tell them apart. So, I wonder what inspires Arch these days. I got the EP.

I AGREE W/ THESE OTHER VOCALISTS HERE AS WELL AS THE NON-. WHEN I HEARD THAT ARCH WAS GONE FROM FATE'S, I FELT SHITTY AND CONFUSED--PROBABLY THE MAIN REASON I HAVEN'T GIVEN THE ALDER YEARS THE CHANCE THEY'VE DESERVED. I SIMPLY THINK OF JOHN ARCH'S STYLE AND ABILITY AS STANDARDS TO WHICH EVEN THE BEST OF VOCALISTS SHOULD ASPIRE IN SOME WAY. I'M A FELLOW CONNECTICUTIAN WHO IS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO SING COVERS FROM MANY OF THE GREAT METAL VOCAL INSPIRATIONS, BUT TO ATTEMPT TO PAY TRIBUTE TO ARCH VOCALLY, PUBLICLY IS A CHALLENGE I HAVEN'T YET FACED. AS MUCH AS I WOULD LIKE THAT, I SENSE I WILL,TO A SIMILAR EXTENT, ENJOY HEARING HIM ONCE AGAIN REPRESENT HIS OWN INCREDIBLE GIFT AND SHARE IT W/ THOSE OF US WHO HAVE REMAINED PROUD AND CONFIDENT FOR THIS LONG, CITING HIM AS ONE OF THE BEST AND MOST INSPIRING VOCALISTS EVER HEARD.

I just listened to both Relentless and Cheyenne in their entirety. All I can say is WOW! It's all I wished for and more. Thanks you John for sharing your voice once again!

"I bring you my dreams, that inspire imagination..."

John Arch has been one of my favorite singers for many years. The new material is amazing. This is the stuff fans of John Arch and Fates Warning alike have been waiting for- very heavy, very melodic- very awesome! Welcome back, John, and thank you for bringing us your dreams!

Metal Blade just posted a teaser mp3 from Twist of Fate. Only five minutes of a tune called Relentless. If your anything like me...I couldn't wait another minute to hear John's voice again!

I have waited 15 years for this reunion and never thought it would happen. I just wish John Arch would have continued after leaving Fates. He is one of my biggest influences and "Awaken The Guardian" is the BEST album of all time. This is the best news I've heard in music...ever!

Posted by Gordon Tittsworth @ 06/03/2003 04:51 PM PST

Thank GOD!
That Alder guy has a tin ear and a weak voice! Arch WAS and IS the reason Fates became popular in the first place. All hail the king of tyrant guardians!

I just hope this doesn't suck like FW and DT do now.

RE: "John Arch, You are Fates Warning! They've never been the same since." - I totally wholeheartedly agree!

Posted by Devin @ 04/27/2003 02:13 AM PST

Hot Damn !! It's about time John returns to the Metal World !! My guess will be that sales of this E.P. will dwarf most recent Fates releases (come on jim...you know it will !!) Hopefully there will be a tour off this !! All Hail JOHN ARCH!!!!!!

John Arch, You are Fates Warning! They've never been the same since. Sorry Jim.

Posted by Z Adamczyk @ 03/25/2003 07:07 PM PST

I was in utter shock. The greatest vocalist of all time is returning. Being a vocalist my self, I had followed every note of his superior voice. H e is a major influence to me and I cannot wait to hear 'Twist of Fate'. I am sure it will be nothing less than genuis.

All Hail!!!!!

Posted by Tony Lamb @ 03/22/2003 05:32 PM PST

This is the best news I have heard in a long time. No one can dispute that Ray and Jim have taken Fates Warning to a new level of perfection, but I still throw on my copy of Awaken to remember the long ago days of supreme metal. The reissues were great and I even have the Dream Theater / John Arch demo CD, but I cannot wait to hear this new material.

Posted by Keith Stillson @ 03/16/2003 05:43 PM PST

The King has returned!
All hail!!!

Posted by Scott Ingold @ 03/10/2003 10:04 PM PST

I have been a fan of Arch for the longest time. When I found out he would not continue with Fates I was saddened. Today I have found out that I might get to hear him again. I too am a singer and I cite him alongside Bruce Dickinson and Steve Perry as my influences. This man has one of the greatest voices in Metal, one of the greatest period and he is very under rated. Welcome back John, God Bless You, Now....show them how it's done.

Posted by Jesus Alonzo @ 03/09/2003 11:10 AM PST

Recently picked up the re-issues of 'Brocken' and 'Spectre'. I wanted them because of the rarities included in them - just to hear mr. Arch sing a little more than the 3 studio albums. I was not dissappointed, allthough it made me think he should've done more.

And now there's this news! It's been many years but I'm quite convinced it will have been worth the wait!

Posted by marc scholten @ 03/06/2003 04:11 AM PST

WOOHOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by suela @ 03/05/2003 02:53 AM PST

That's the best news I have ever heard from this site.John Arch should had never give up on his career. When he left fates he should continued solo. But is how they say, better later than never.I just can't wait to get my copy of Twist of fate(it's a very aproppiate title).
I am wondering... what's the name of this supergroup?

Posted by daniel dutra @ 02/27/2003 05:33 AM PST

Arch tendria que haber realizado este proyecto muchos años antes.
Estoy muy emocionado y ansioso por volver a escuchar a este rey de la creatividad y la melodia.

Larga vida a Fates !!!

I almost passed out when i heard this. John is my favorite vocalist of all time. I used to bug the hell out of other music majors and force them to listen to his melody lines back in college. Collecting his demo tape files and rough recordings only made me feel more depressed that i might never hear his unique and complex voice again. This is a miracle. I cant freaking wait!

Posted by Jess @ 02/24/2003 12:55 PM PST

im am so happy that i get another chance to hear the greatest voice in music, ive been a fan sence 1987. and have felt at a lost when jon arch stoped singing.

Posted by brad @ 02/22/2003 06:28 AM PST

Posted by RICARDO @ 02/20/2003 01:55 PM PST

I have been waiting to hear from this great talent for a long, long time. I can't wait to get this EP and Play the HELL out of it. Good luck John, the Metal community has been without your voice for far too long!
