07/21/2003 Entry: "Update from BW&BK"

A brief update from BRAVE WORDS & BLOODY KNUCKLES - www.bravewords.com

BW&BK recently spoke to guitar player JIM MATHEOS before FATES WARNING's set opening up for DREAM THEATER and QUEENSRYCHE. The primary focus was news on Fates' upcoming new album. "We started writing the album before this tour," reveals Matheos. "But we dropped that once we found out we were going on the road. At this stage, it's still too early to tell what direction it's goingin. We're experimenting with ideas, but things are always changing. We're already late for the new record, so we need to get on it. OSI took some time, and that's why there's been a bit of a wait. But a new a Fates Warning album should be out by late year, or early next year."

I am so grateful and inspired that you guys, for the simple pure love of music, have continued to play what's in your heart all these years, and have not given way to the almighty dollar! Not that a few bucks is a bad thing, but when it comes to the music, you have always stayed true, and that should never be compromised! You are amazing musicians with a God given talent, that has captured my attention and heart for years! Keep on doing what you do best! Merry CHRISTmas!

I'm 90% agree with Arthur: APSOG and Disconnected are excellent albums -- arguably Fate's bests so far. I don't think that they should move back to their earlier years, but I do know that surviving as a band is also a matter of evolving in the right direction.

Seeing Fates barely playing only five songs in the just-finished tour with Queensryche and Dream Theater, and seeing how they are perceived as an unknown band to the crowd (relegated to a third or fourth plane, with limited participation), that was painful man… Fates Warning (one of the greatest bands in the progressive metal History) deserves to be in the right place on the podium. Ray Alder saying in concert "For those who don't know who we are, we're Fates Warning" sounds no less than pathetic. It's time for Fates to be as famous and adored as Dream Theater and Queensryche, and this can't be done without some changes in their attitude, mood and marketing policies.

We all know that they're monsters, but the cult to Fates Warning has to grow, otherwise they will never get the attention they deserve.

Stay in the way you are guys. Forget abbout those nostalgic freaks. APSOG and Disconnected both kick some serious ass. The last thing we need right now is Fates selling out...

Good news! I just hope you'll add some pepper and Tabasco to the new recipe, since APSOG and Disconnected are a tad "tasteless". Ok, ok, those are very good albums, but it's time to go out and conquer The World with some attitude. To be sincere, I don't think that the band will survive another monotonic album, so please do try to rock this time, ok? – guys, you always rock "progressively speaking", yes, but... remember "Part of the Machine"? That's what I mean by rocking without leaving your own way! Bring Frank Aresti back on board, drop the sad moods, play heavier, make your MONSTER drummer sound as he did in his first album with the band, keep yourselves innovating with those odd tempos, create new weird melodic lines for Ray Alder (like in "Monument"!), simply, DO YOUR STUFF AS YOU KNOW AND DESERVE, FOR THE BAND'S SAKE!!!! -- BTW, also try to create a catchier (by no means commercial, but catchier) cover for your album: I bet that it can make the difference in sales. Do you *really* think that the covers of APSOG and Disconnected are in some way interesting or eye-popping? Bah! You don't have to be boring to be clever or intellectual! Move on, men!

No Fates Warning at Spokane or Boise....Sucks!!! you better be playing in Seattle. This will be the 3rd time I've flown to see them only to be cancelled.I guess Im a fool for taking trips around a Fates Warning show.Very inconsistant, very dissapointing

Hell Yea it's about time y'all squeezed out a new album, we've been waiting for years! Of course, being Fates, it will kick ASS. Hopefully there'll be more solos, more shredding, more awesome lyrics, and epic songs. But it's all right even if it's like Disconnected. Either way, I can't wait!!!

Good-More songs.more crunchy guitars, more players(Frank).Alot of Fates fans like the a.p.s.o.g.stuff but I to this day am not impressed. Its like walking in mud.P.O.V.,Inside out,no exit I listen to frequently. No reason to recreate those but something along those lines would be refreshing.I look forward to it and the Pkoenix show kicked, now, on to Seattle
